Ingrown Toenail Surgery Western Melbourne
Ingrown toenails can be very painful and recurrent, often getting infected and preventing people from participating in daily activities and even wearing closed shoes.
Leanne Shields Podiatry treats these gently during your general skin and nail care appointment, in a conservative way.
However if this does not resolve the problem a toenail surgery may be warranted to remove the offending nail segment (the problem piece of nail growing abnormally into the skin and causing pain).
We perform two nail removal procedures which produce permanent results in approximately 97% of cases:
- Removal of the offending nail edge only – Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA) very commonly performed.
- Complete removal of the entire nail – Total Nail Avulsion (TNA) rarely performed as PNA usually all that is needed.
We schedule a minimum of two included follow up review appointments to check your progress following the procedure at week 1 and then week 3, post operatively.
There are many possible causes of an ingrown nail. However the most common is hereditary and improper cutting of the nails. Most of the causes of ingrown nails are preventable. There are several ways you can prevent ingrown nails. We have covered this topic in this blog post.
If you are experiencing pain from ingrown toenails, or your ingrown nails keep coming back, it’s time to have this issue addressed.
